Experts say if your sex life is less than stellar, try cleaning your bedroom.
“Studies show that clutter kills libido. A messy and disorganized space can cause stress, which is not good for our sex life,” sex educator Portia Brown explained to The Guardian.
“You may find yourself thinking, ‘Why didn’t I put that laundry away?'” instead of focusing on pleasure, she said.
Cam Fraser, a men’s sex coach, told the paper that the bedroom should be “like a sanctuary”, free of any distractions, clutter or stress.
This way, you and your partner can feel relaxed and ready to be intimate.
How would one create their own sexual sanctuary? As Fraser says, take five minutes to relax before having sex.
“If you have dirty clothes on the bed or washing needs to be put away, at least put everything in a closet, close its door and make the bed” – and don’t bring your long to-do list to bed.
Experts also told the paper that there may be another, surprising reason your sex life may be suffering – too much cuddling.
If a person is a hugger in all of them times, but their counterpart is not, this can lead to problems, they said.
A non-hug can begin to feel suffocated. If your partner withdraws from physical affection, including sex, it can lead to feeling more detached.
“They end up in this cycle of one person pulling back to try to widen the distance and the other person trying to close the distance,” Natasha Silverman, a sex and relationship therapist for Relate, explained to the paper.
“It’s a really unhealthy cycle for both people, and it can feel very emotionally damaging to the person who needs more connection.”
To avoid turning your partner off, ask them, “Is that okay? Do you like this?” before you start petting.
If you notice that your desire to cuddle is causing tension, take a step back and let your partner follow.
Silverman noted, “The way we initiate love often replicates the way we initiate sex. So if you can solve that when it comes to cuddling, you can break the cycle when it comes to sex.”
