Designers this season are falling for this retro fabric.
As temperatures begin to cool and clothing refreshes, suede is making a quiet comeback.
Straight from the runways of Gucci, Ralph Lauren and Miu Miu, this ’70s favorite is back as fashionistas wear suede with skirts, dresses, jackets, boots and more.
The soft, velvety texture made of leather from the underside of animal hides makes fashion lovers swoon. eBay searches for “suede jacket” have increased more than 260% since July, several media outlets have reported.
Nuuly, a popular clothing rental subscription company, has seen leather/suede options expand month-to-date – currently boasting their no. 4 fabrication as Western wear and country chic continue to resonate with young fans, a representative confirmed to The Post.
“We expect this to continue to increase as the weather cools,” a Nuuly spokesperson told The Post.
Clare Lewis, founder of Retold Vintage, delights in its versatility – perfect for dressing up with denim or upping the ante with tailored looks.
“Besides its soft, tactile look, I love the versatility of suede,” Lewis told the Telegraph.
“It can be dressed down very easily with denim or dressed up for a more luxurious look paired with tailoring. As a naturally breathable fabric, this also makes it a much lighter alternative to leather, meaning it’s a lovely transitional piece in your wardrobe.”
Layer it over an embroidered blouse or a sleeveless crewneck for an effortlessly chic look, or layer a jacket and skirt set to match.
“It’s a good transitional piece and brown shades of suede are a favorite for layering from winter to summer,” Orlagh McCloskey, co-founder and creative director of Rixo, told the Telegraph.
Looking through any soul sister’s — or brother’s — closet, you’ll notice that the fabric was commonly used to create jackets and vests in various shades of brown.
But this season, it has been updated with bold colors, creative prints and new styles.
Suede connoisseurs can now dress in the material from head to toe with suede hats, bags, tops, skirts, pants and shoes hitting the shelves in every color.
While the retro fabric feels luxe and dominates high-end runways, it’s made its way to the streets of New York City with brands ranging from Miu Miu to Madewell—thanks, Alexa Chung!
However, the sturdy fabric has an extremely long lifespan—if cared for properly—so classic dressers who prefer a more traditional look should rush to, say, Brooklyn to sift through the thrift.
“There are so many chamois still out there waiting to be found,” Lewis said. “Definitely explore your charity shop, vintage store or online retailer for options.”
